Two Years after Gunmen Burnt Down Nnewi South Secretariat, Work Resumes

By Ikeugonna Eleke

There are indications that Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, is winning the war against insurgency in the state.

This follows the recent reopening of Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, over two years after unknown gunmen attacked it.

The local government secretariat, and other communities within the area, have witnessed attacks from gunmen suspected to be members of the militant arm of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), with the name, Eastern Security Network (ESN).

The headquarters of the LG in Ukpor was closed down for nearly two years following series of attacks by gunmen which left different parts of the local government secretariat destroyed.

The attacks started during the administration of Governor Willie Obiano, the immediate past governor of the state, and continued weeks into the administration of the incumbent governor of the state, Prof Chukwuma Soludo.

At the very peak of insurgency in Anambra, no government infrastructure within Nnewi South and Ihiala Local Government Areas was deemed safe, and police stations, the council secretariats and others, were attacked and destroyed.

The Soludo Administration, however, stamped its feet on the ground and continued to fight the insurgents, to the point where they are deemed to have been exterminated today.

After a year of rebuilding the damaged secretariat, on February 29th, 2024, workers of Nnewi South Local Government secretariat who had been away from work, converged for the re-opening.

During the ceremony held at the premises of the secretariat recently, the Transition Committee Chairman of the LGA, Ikenna Aniagboso, also resumed work at Ukpor, the headquarters of the council, after operating skeletally for over a year.

Speaking, Aniagboso, thanked Governor Soludo, Homeland Security team, Nnewi North LGA, stakeholders and indigenes of Nnewi South LGA, for the recovery of the area.

The Bishop of Amichi Diocese, Bishop Ephraim Ikeakor, who performed the re-dedication ceremony, along with other stakeholders, prayed for the security of the area and safety of its workers.

Among those present during the reopening of the secretariat were House of Assembly members representing Nnewi South I and II constituencies, Nonso Atuchukwu and Johnbosco Akaegbobi, respectively.
