Extension of Road Projects to Ayamelum will Boost Food Production – Udemezue

By Jude Atupulazi

The Anambra State House of Assembly wants the Anambra State Government to extend its ongoing road projects to Ayamelum Local Government Area, a major food basket of the state.

This was contained in a resolution passed by the Anambra State House of Assembly urging Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct the Commissioner for Works to extend the Amansea Awba-Ofemili Road in Awka North Local Government Area to Umerum in Ayamelum Local Government Area of the State.

The resolution was sequel to a motion moved by Hon. Abuchi Udemezue, representing Anyamelum Constituency, during last Thursday’s plenary in Awka.

The lawmaker argued that extending the completed Amansea-Awba-Ofemili Road to Umerum would significantly reduce their travel time to Awka, the state capital.

Udemezue said such a development would boost transportation of agricultural produce from the local government to Awka and invariably improve the economy of the state.

The Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme, while supporting the motion, expressed Governor Soludo’s commitment to improving lives in Anyamelum, pointing out that there would be increased food production and hunger reduction with the road extension.

Contributing, the member representing Anaocha Constituency two, Hon Ejike Okechukwu, and Hon Fred Ezenwa, representing Onitsha South Constituency One, appealed for the governor’s intervention to bring locally produced food to markets to assist in alleviating hunger.

The Minority Leader, Mr. Johnbosco Akaegbobi; Mr. Augustine Ike, representing Nnewi North Constituency; and his Idemili South Constituency counterpart, Barrister Ebuka Igwe, emphasized Anyamelum’s significance as a major food basket in Anambra State, advocating improved access roads to reduce the cost of food items in the markets.

The Speaker of the House, Right Hon Somtochukwu Udeze, read out the resolution which was supported through a voice vote by the members of the House.
