Women Urged to Join Fight Against Drug Abuse in Communities

The Governor of Anambra State Dr. Willie Obiano has tasked Anambra women on joining hands with government to tackle drug abuse, cultism and drug related vices in the State.

Governor Obiano was speaking when he participated in leadership training for community women leaders in Anambra State.

Our correspondent, reported that Governor Obiano was recieved by his wife, Dr. Ebelechkwu Obiano as he flagged off the event held at Professor Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre, Awka.

The event has the theme, “Role of Community Women Leaders for Sustainable Development”.
Dignitaries that graced the occasion include Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Uchenna Okafor, ASATU Chairman, Chief Alex Onukwue, APGA Chairman in the State, Sir. Norbert Obi, Anambra State Chairman of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene and women from Communities in the State, among others.

Governor Obiano, who described women as the nucleus of development in the State, stressed that women should pay close attention to activities of their children and not leave it to their teachers and lecturers.

The Governor announced that Anambra State Government will train about two thousand youths by the end of this quarter, after which they will be given seed money, noting that the third phase of the Community Choose your project initiative will commence by January next year, calling for more Independence on the part of Anambra women.

In her speech, the Commissioner for Social Development, Children and Women Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue said that the present administration has entrenched community development and strengthened grassroot governance in the State and commended the Governor and wife for their impact making interventions.

Lady Ndidi who stressed that the presence of government has been felt in all communities of the State, highlighted giant strides of the present government in all sectors of the State economy.

She pointed out that over fifty five thousand indigent women and vulnerable children have been touched by the wife of the Governor, which she said highlights the strengths and indispensable role of women in the Society.

The event also afforded opportunity for the inauguration of elected ASATU executives, Women wing.
