Windstorm Sacks Sisters of Jesus the Saviour

By Jude Atupulazi

Sisters of Jesus the Saviour whose Novitiate is domiciled in Isuaniocha, Awka North LGA of Anambra State, have suddenly found themselves homeless. This is no thanks to a windstorm that ravaged their building on March 25, 2024.

Fides reports that a powerful windstorm struck their new Novitiate in Isuaniocha, Awka Catholic Diocese, resulting in significant damage to the roof of the building which had already been completed.

Sr Mary Natalia Agbochini, who spoke to Fides, said the storm had exposed them  to the elements, with rain freely penetrating their once sheltered space.

Her words, ‘The incident occurred in the afternoon while the novices and sisters were engaged in their usual activities. Some novices raised the alarm as they noticed parts of the fence collapsing, followed by the sudden detachment of roofing materials from the building structure. In the chaos that ensued, some novices were slightly injured, with some sustaining injuries from falling debris and others experiencing falls while seeking safety.

‘Upon discovering the extent of the damage, the Mother General of the Sisters of Jesus, the Savior, Resurrecta Maria Agu, SJS, who had been away making invitations, returned to behold the scene of devastation.

‘She immediately took charge, offering comfort and assistance to those who were crying and in shock of what had happened. Additionally, the Bishop of Awka (Catholic) Diocese was promptly informed of the situation and he took swift action to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved. The Mother General was taken to the hospital for evaluation, although she never knew she was being taken to the hospital. But on arrival and knowledge of what was going on, she insisted she was fine. Due to her vow of obedience, she remained under observation overnight before being confirmed fit to resume her duties.’

Sister Agbochini said that in response to the immediate need for shelter and support, the Bishop graciously provided accommodation for the affected novices and sisters at the Achbishop A.K Obiefuna Retreat, Pastoral Centre  Awka, for the blessing and opening of the new noviciate/ formation House and the first profession of their sisters scheduled for 4th April, 2024 where they had been cared for and provided with necessities since the incident occurred till date.
