… Gifts Ambulance to Agulu Sickle Cell Home
By Jude Atupulazi
The Governorship Candidate of Young Progressives Party, YPP, Sir Paul Chukwuma, and his running mate, Mr Uzu Okagbue, have declared their determination to help end the scourge of sickle cell disease, as a result of their collective sad experiences with the disease.
Sir Chukwuma, who was represented by his running mate, Mr Okagbue, at this year’s World Sickle Cell Day at the Sickle Cell Orphanage Home in Agulu, Anaocha LGA of Anambra State, recently, said both he and Okagbue had lost their brothers to the disease like many people and were thus, ready to do whatever was possible to end the disease.
Speaking on behalf of his principal at the event, Okagbue said, ‘I have a personal loss relating to sickle cell anemia, and indeed, many of us do. While Sir Paul lost a brother, Hyginus Chidalu Chukwuma; I lost a brother, Sunday Okoye. Today, I remember him with profound rededication to this cause, and I am convinced beyond doubt that we can put an end to this.
‘We can end sickle cell, if we show half as much commitment as Sir Paul Chukwuma has shown when he adopted the Sickle Cell Orphanage Home in Agulu and has since been a pillar of support to them, as testified by the Director of the Sickle Cell Home, Aisha Edwards Maduagwu,’ the YPP Deputy Governorship Candidate added.
Uzu Okagbue also thanked Sir Chukwuma for purchasing a brand new ambulance for the Sickle Cell Home and remarked that there was no problem too difficult to surmount collectively when love for people superseded personal interests.
He assured the Director of the Centre, Aisha Edwards, that they would do even more.
The new ambulance was commissioned for use by the former Governor of Anambra State and former Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, who was represented at the event by Mr. Valentine Obienyem.
The Sickle Cell Awareness Day is a day set aside by the United Nations to raise global awareness about sickle cell disease and its impact, especially in countries with weak healthcare systems.
