Prof. Chinelo Ursula Umedum, a distinguished Professor of Medical Microbiology, has emphasized the untapped potential of fungi in addressing global sustainability challenges. She made this assertion during the 21st Inaugural Lecture of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, held on March 20, 2025, at the University’s ETF Auditorium.
Delivering the lecture titled “Unlocking the Mycological Treasure Chest: Fungi for a Sustainable Future,” Professor Umedum underscored the critical role fungi play in medicine, Agriculture, industry, and environmental sustainability. She noted that while often overlooked, fungi possess enormous potential for innovations in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, waste management, and renewable energy.
According to the Professor of Medical Microbiology, investing in mycological research and development can offer eco-friendly solutions to pressing global issues such as food insecurity, antimicrobial resistance, and climate change. “Fungi are nature’s silent workers—capable of transforming waste into wealth, healing disease, and restoring balance to our ecosystems,” she said.
Professor Umedum called for increased government funding, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the incorporation of mycology into mainstream science education and national development strategies.
In her remark, the Ag. Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha described the topic as visionary and timely, stating that it aligns with the University’s commitment to research, innovation, and sustainable development. “This lecture reminds us of the boundless resources within nature that await our exploration, especially through scientific inquiry,” she said.
The event’s highpoint was the presentation of a certificate and plaque of honour to Professor Umedum by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Omenugha, in recognition of her scholarly contributions and distinguished service to the University and broader academic community.
Professor Chinelo Ursula Umedum is also a dedicated researcher and faculty member in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University.
