. . . Says He’s still in Guber Race

The governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in Anambra State in the last guber election, Mr Oseloka Obaze, says those who might have betrayed the party for filthy lucre in that election are now regretting their action and suffering with others owing to the current situation in the state.

Obaze who stated this at a media briefing in his office in Awka, however said he did not think those people would make a similar mistake next time.

Said he, ‘If indeed, as you suggest, that those who betrayed the party in the last guber election were PDP stakeholders, I believe that they are now reaping the consequences of their action.

‘If they did that because they were individually or collectively incentivized or compromised, or did so because they had an axe to grind, they are now suffering the consequences along with the rest of us. You don’t cut your nose to spite your face,’ Obaze said, noting however that lessons must have been learned.

On the perceived factionalisation of the party leadership in the state, Obaze expressed surprise at the insinuation, insisting that the state PDP only had one state chairman in Chief Ndubisi Nwobu, as well as one state executive.

He also said that the state PDP was not due for any congress in the state until the last quarter of 2021 after the governorship election, even as he however admitted that there were people on the fringes of the party who liked to create uncertainties that gave impetus to what he called mercantile politics.

‘Such people believe we are yet in another treading season. But my personal view is that the party is supreme and must ensure discipline within its rank and file. Those who undermine the party ought to be disciplined and we witnessed such disciplinary actions in the recent past,’ he said.

The international diplomat, speaking on whether he had interest to run for the governorship position again amid the zoning argument, described zoning as a red herring, being party based. He said PDP was not in favour of zoning, even as he said he had always been in the race for the governorship since 2017 and would always be.

‘As far as I know, PDP is not into zoning. As to my personal disposition, since 2017, I have been in the race; I remain in the race and will always be in the race, because I have been proactively engaged in the process of engendering purposeful leadership and sustainable development change to Anambra State.

‘Like most, I remain painfully conscious of Anambra’s need for a skilled leader that is committed to redirecting the state towards sustainable development and greatness.

‘I’m also mindful that Anambra has experienced huge missed opportunities and loss of time, financial and material resources. That ought to be redressed,’ Obaze stated.
