. . . Urges CMO to be Good Fathers on Earth

By Uchechukwu Enem

The Retreat Director for the 2020 Awka Diocesan Catholic Men Organization (ADCMO) & Rector of St. JohnBosco Seminary, Rev. Fr. Paul Mary Chukwukebe, has called on Christian fathers not to justify themselves for committing adultery. He made this call recently during the 2020 annual retreat of ADCMO members at A.K. Obiefuna Retreat, Pastoral & Conference Centre.

Having the theme: ‘Being Another Christ for my Family’, the retreat director explained to fathers that they should always possess the virtue of fidelity to their spouses. He said that when love dwells in a family, there would not be any chance to cheat. He reminded them that Jesus has handed over to them, the key to the family through the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony, just the same way He handed over to Peter, the Key to the church. He told them that the family is a domestic church that shares in the mission of the church which is for the salvation of souls.

‘We discovered that not all men go outside. It is evil and there is no condition to justify adultery either by means of raising children because the wife is barren or by having external affairs. It is a grave sin and an act of injustice to your spouse and such should not be found among Catholic men. When men engage in such, they lose sight of salvation and the sense of sin. If they had Christ at heart, they would not be thinking about it. Through the compassion of Christ, patience and prayers, I believe the issue of domestic violence and infidelity could be eliminated in a family’ he added.

Fr Chukwukebe reminded them that fathers are meant to preserve the souls entrusted to them which include their wives and children. By doing so, he said they were expected to show love to their wives and children just as Jesus did for us. He said that Fathers should join in the family prayers and help in building an edifying prayer life in their family.

‘They should pay the little price that love demands even when their wives and children err. Fathers must represent Jesus to each of their family members by showing the compassion and love of Christ. They should learn to participate in the family prayers by making it as a duty that the family prays morning and evening or at least once in a day especially in the evening. It has been observed that family prayers now belong to the mother and children only. It is important to pray together and live the life of virtue like fidelity to your wives to become another Christ to your wives and children’ he concluded

In his remarks, the Chairman of ADCMO, Vitus Uzoh, said that the annual retreat was an opportunity to awaken the spiritual life of fathers and to prepare them for the Lenten season. He said that the retreat was expected to drill the fathers on how to show good leadership in their homes and to the society. He added that fathers should show love to their family and to their neighbours. He reminded them that the home was a domestic church they should uphold with sacredness.

‘They should live Christ life in their families and show love to their neighbours. They should regard everyone on the street as their daughters and sons and learn to control their homes so that the general society can be good’ he added.

In his vote of thanks, he appreciated the retreat director, Fr Chukwukebe; the retreat organizers and members of ADMCO for their support and cooperation towards a successful retreat. In a special way, he thanked God for making this year’s retreat a success even as he prayed for a better one next year.
