Support for the Governorship ambition of Prof Obiora Okonkwo of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has continued to swell, with Nzukọ Ịme Obi Idemili, a socio-cultural group spanning the 14 local government areas of Idemili North and Idemili South, rallying to endorse Prof. Okonkwo’s candidacy.
The group, which wields significant influence across Anambra State and in the diaspora, pledged to mobilize votes and rally support to ensure his victory at the polls.
Following a consultative meeting in Ogidi on Monday, Chief Sir Edwin Egbobe, President of Nzukọ Ịme Obi Idemmili, announced the group’s decision after extensive consultations with its members and branches.
‘After thorough deliberations and consultations across our structures, we have unanimously endorsed our leader, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, to fly the APC flag. We are committed to mobilizing the needed support to secure his victory in both the primaries and the general election,’ he said.
Speaking on what set Prof. Okonkwo apart, Chief Egbobe highlighted his track record in business, academia, and leadership, noting that his expertise and international exposure made him the best candidate to restore and rebuild Anambra.
‘His administration will prioritize security, inclusiveness, and economic growth. We foresee the revival of our cultural values, job creation, and infrastructural development under his leadership. Anambra deserves better, and Prof. Okonkwo has the vision and capacity to deliver.’
Chief Egbobe dismissed concerns about zoning, asserting that no formal zoning agreement existed within Anambra State or in the APC. However, he noted that even if such an arrangement was in place, all three senatorial zones had had their turns, with the current Governor completing the tenure of Anambra South, making it time for the Anambra Central Zone to produce the next governor.
‘The best-qualified aspirant to rescue and rebuild Anambra is Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, we will rally individuals and institutions to ensure he wins at the polls as the flag bearer of APC as he’s the most popular aspirant today in the state,’ he stated.
With the APC primaries scheduled for April, momentum continues to build around Prof. Okonkwo’s candidacy, as more groups and stakeholders rally behind him, leading to pundits seeing him as the candidate to beat in the coming primary election of the party.
