Residents of Obodoukwu, in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State were seen recently clearing and cleaning their surroundings, while men and women mobilized by the local government boss were busy opening up blocked drainage to ease the flow of flood water.
The exercise also included repair of roads leading to the industrial hubs of the council area.
Speaking to Fides, a resident in the area, Mazi Peter Ogbonnaya, said work on the drainage would enable free flow of water as well as reduce spread of malaria caused by stagnant water as a result of blocked drainage. He described the exercise as a great relief, not just to residents, but to commuters.
Also speaking, the chairman, Bus Drivers Association, Ogbaru Council Area, Mr Anthony Ezeokorie, who participated in the cleaning exercise, expressed joy, pointing out the challenges posed by the blocked drainage.
For his part the Ogbaru Local Government boss, Hon. Barr. Arinzechukwu Awogu, who was actively involved in the cleaning exercise, said the exercise would be continuous, even as he encouraged the residents to constantly keep their surroundings clean.
