Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has waded into a land dispute between two communities in the state which has spanned over 100 years.
Obiano said government was coming into the Ntokor – Awka communities’ land dispute to forestall breakdown of law and order.
An Assistant Superintendent of Police attached to the IGP monitoring Squad, Martins Onoja, who had visited the communities to serve them a notice of invitation earlier this month, had been killed.
Obiano, who was represented by the Anambra State Commissioner for Lands, Mr. Bonaventure Enemali, who received scores of protesters from Awka Community at Government House, said Government would not sit back and watch communities engage in violence.
Obiano said, ‘We’ll not watch that (violence) happen. I commend you for this peaceful protest, and I assure you that the boundary committee will look into the matter and settle it once and for all.’
Earlier, Mr. Clement Ekeh, leader of the protesters, had told Obiano that the land in question belonged to two families in Awka and that it was their ancestral land.
Indigenes of Ntokor Community had on Monday also led a protest to Government House, accusing a prominent indigene of Awka, Austin Ndigwe, of appropriating their land for his community.
