Obeleagu-Ozalla Road Onitsha Erosion Site Flood Channel Opens for use

The flood channel at the erosion site at Obeleagu-Ozalla Road, Onitsha opened for use on Monday, 15th June, 2020.

The Governor of Anambra State Chief Willie Obiano gave the assurance when he inspected the ongoing construction work at the site, by the State government.

During his first visit to the site, on 28th May, 2020, he promised to complete the channel within twenty days to check erosion menace in the area

The devastating gully erosion which has affected about forty buildings, with many more under threat, is about thirty five meters deep.

According to Governor Obiano, with the completion of the first phase of the work, the second phase which will be executed during the dry season, is to fill up the huge gully created by the erosion .

The Governor added that the third and final phase is to clear the Nkisi River to enhance free flow of water, and commended the people living in the area for cooperating with the contractor.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Marcel Ifejiofor said that the Governor’s regular visit to the site demonstrates the importance he attached to the project, stressing that there is also plan to open up Nkisi River to harness and discharge water into the River Niger.

The contractor, Mr. Yousef Yusuf in his remarks, promised to continue to execute the project according to specifications.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Nnamdi Onukwuba who hails from Onitsha; Transition Committee Chairman for Onitsha North Council Area, Mr. Patrick Ayamba and a property owner in the area, appreciated the Governor for the quick intervention, in keeping to his words.

Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Primus Odili, among others, accompanied the Governor on the inspection visit.
