Nweze’s Death, Tragic, Untimely – Soludo

Anambra Governor, Prof Chulwuma Soludo, has described the death of Anambra based Journalist, Mr Alphonsus Nweze, as tragic and untimely. Nweze who practiced his journalism in Onitsha, Anambra State but lived in Asaba, Delta State, was involved in a fatal car crash last Tuesday in Asaba on his way home.

According to reports, after the shuttle bus he boarded left Onitsha and entered Asaba, its brakes failed, causing the bus to fall on its side which happened to be where Nweze was seated. By the time the bus was lifted and Nweze taken to hospital, he was confirmed dead. Nweze worked for Apex News and other media outlets.

In his reaction to the tragedy, contained in a condolence message signed on behalf his behalf by his Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, Soludo described the death of Nweze who hailed from Nsukka, Enugu State, as tragic and untimely.

Aburime wrote: ‘On behalf of the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, I deeply express profound grief and condolences to the Anambra State Correspondents’ Chapel on the tragic and untimely demise of their member, Mr. Alphonsus Nweze, a dedicated journalist with Apex News, an online publication.

‘Mr. Nweze was a committed member of the Correspondents’ Chapel who lost his life in a fatal road accident on Tuesday afternoon along the Onitsha–Asaba Expressway. His death leaves behind not only his dear family, friends, and colleagues, but also memories of his passion for truth, integrity, and public service through journalism.

‘We will continue to remember him as a diligent and courageous reporter whose work contributed meaningfully to the information landscape of Anambra State.’

Soludo further described Nweze as being more than a journalist but was a voice for truth and an advocate of responsible reporting. He described his death as untimely and not just a loss to his family and colleagues but to the entire state.

‘We will miss him,’ he concluded.
