The new Anambra State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr Mohammed Idris, says the command, between January and February 2020, seized 5441.5248kg of assorted drugs in the state and also arrested about forty-five suspected drug traffickers
Those arrested included 42 males and three females. The arrest and seizures took place between January and February, according to Mr. Idris.
He gave the breakdown of the illicit drugs seized as follows: 224.1521kg cannabis sativa, 0.0464kg cocaine, 0.0046kg heroine.
Others are psychotropic substances which include crystalline meth – 0.0052kg, broncleer with codeine syrup – 320.0000kg, tramadol – 2.180kg and rapnol – 1.540kg
NDLEA boss who disclosed this to newsmen in his office in Awka vowed to always identify, arrest and prosecute anyone found wanting.
He explained that Anambra State was strategically located close to one of Nigeria’s cannabis-producing states (Delta State), where he said drug dealers either conveyed their illicit drugs for sales or came to buy across the state.
He commended the command for the arrests and seizures and urged them to intensify efforts in eradicating the menace in the state.
‘This scorecard is impressive and laudable. I want you to sustain your winning strategies. Be focused, not deterred and intensify efforts in detecting more illicit drug dealers to ensure that those involved are eradicated completely from the state,’ he said
Mr. Idris commended Governor Willie Obiano for his support and commitment in the fight against illicit drug activities in the state and called for the support of relevant stakeholders at all levels to join in the anti-narcotics campaign among youths in society.
