My First Experience at Fides, an Intern’s Musings

By Deborah Chinyelum

I woke up with a feeling of nostalgia. It felt so good to be part of this widely acclaimed media house. At the same time, I wasn’t particularly happy about having to wake up earlier than I usually would. The excitement must have gotten a better part of me because I suddenly became energized to prepare for the day.

Walking along the almost unfamiliar road, taking in the cool breeze, I was earnestly anticipatory. It was my first day at work as an IT student!

I walked into the compound with so much gusto. I just couldn’t wait to dive right in. I met some colleagues. Like me, it was their first time.

We moved up to the auditorium in trickles for the General Company Meeting (it just happened to fall on that day) and waited a while for the Director, Rev Fr Dr Robert Anagboso, and his Deputy, Rev Fr Constantine Okoli, to arrive. I got to experience for the first time, a company meeting, the way issues were tabled, and how they were handled.

During the course of the meeting, my colleagues and I  were asked to introduce ourselves and we were warmly welcomed. I remember trying to feel my heartbeat for any signs of nervousness, and, thankfully, there was none. How could there be in such a friendly atmosphere?

We closed the General Meeting and had to wait behind for a brief meeting with the Director and the Deputy Director. We were reminded to be focused. We were released to go round the various units of the media house right after.

The first place we went to was the newsroom, we received another bout of welcome from the Editor-in-Chief, Mr Jude Atupulazi, who also gave us excerpts of what was done in the unit. I got to meet one of the staff members of the press and I was further schooled on the rudiments of paper publication.

The highlight of the events the day was the meeting with the Production Manager (with my colleagues) who stretched us on our first day (imagine having to brainstorm and come up with feasible ideas on your first day at work). But, I enjoyed every bit of it.

Looking forward to having a fruitful stay at Fides. I’m feeling empowered already. Is it still early? Time will surely tell.
