Frantic efforts are in a top gear towards resuscitating the envious glory and pride of Umunze Community in Orumba South Local Government Area, Anambra State.
The new President General of the Community, Sir Engr Onyinyechukwu Iheazor stated this recently in Awka while briefing newsmen on his work plan for his community.
The new President General said, ‘for past 20 years or more, Umunze, which is the largest community in Orumba South, had no elected president general, but acting president and caretaker committee which are not recognized by the government.
‘So, all these years, we lost our glories, but we are trying to restore them and peace in Umunze.
‘So far, we have so many programmes for Umunze.
‘We are now reviewing our constitution written in 1982,’ the President General said, and explained further that his government had set up Security, Health, Agriculture, Works, recovery of assets and liabilities committees, among others, to ease the administration of Umunze Community.
He continued, ‘we are proposing a befitting secretariat for the town. Also, we have a hall built by a philanthropist from Umunze, but it was vandalized.
‘However, with the goodwill of Umunze, we are working on getting and putting it back to shape, for town meetings and offices now,’ Sir Iheazor said.
‘We have projects for hospitals; we want to put many dilapidated secondary school buildings in our community back to shape.
‘You know our tenure is just three years; so, we want to lay a solid foundation our successors will build on, for Umunze to be progressing,’ he stated and expressed hope that soon his community will begin to witness massive presence of Soludo’s government in areas of road infrastructure, health, among others.
‘Governor Prof Chukwuma Soludo was in Umunze sometimes ago, for thanksgiving by Hon Chinwe Nnabuife, who is an indigene of Umunze and member representing Orumba North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
‘He (governor) requested her to bring a list of roads in Umunze, government will reconstruct.
‘By the special grace of God, we have already compiled about seven of them and submitted the same to the Governor.
‘Recently, I was with the Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, to discuss about our General Hospital, which is not well equipped.
‘I have also discussed with the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Matters, Hon TonyCollins Nwabunwanne, and the Commissioner for Works, Engr Ifeanyi Okoma, for their own parts,’ the Umunze President General said.
While saying that his government runs inclusive and open administration that works in collaboration with the Town Union’s Women wing as well as that of the youths, which he described as the foot soldiers of development, Iheazor appealed to the entire people of Umunze to come up with positive advice and suggestions for peace, progress and restoration of glory of Umunze.
