Lawmakers in the Anambra State House of Assembly, have taken a decisive step towards curbing the menace of touting within Anambra State by recently passing a bill, for a law to provide for the prohibition of touting in the state.

The executive bill, presented by the Majority leader of the House, and member representing Ekwusigo Constituency, Sir. Ikenna Ofodeme, was aimed at prohibiting touting across all sectors in the state.

The bill underwent thorough scrutiny in the Committee of the Whole.

The bill was passed following a motion by the Majority Leader, Sir Ofodeme, for its third reading, and was seconded by the Minority Leader, Mr. Johnbosco Akaegbobi, representing Nnewi South Constituency One.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, announced that the law would come into force from 10 April 2024, immediately it was assented to by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

Speaking shortly after the plenary, the Majority Leader, Sir Ofodeme, said the bill once enacted into law, would empower authorities to crack down on individuals engaging in all forms of touting activities thereby restoring order and enhancing public safety across the state.

He lamented that touting had long been a problem, causing disruptions and inconveniences to residents and visitors alike, saying that by outlawing touting, the government aimed to create a more conducive environment for business activities to thrive.

Sir Ofodeme maintained that the activities of touting had been reducing the revenue of the state, saying that the law would checkmate such trend.
