Over 5000 individuals from 15 communities in Orumba South Constituency who benefited from the free medical outreach organized and sponsored by the member representing Orumba South Constituency in the Anambra State House Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Nwafor, has hailed the house member for the initiative.

Fides gathered that the free medical outreach was part of the medical intervention programme which Hon. Nwafor had flagged-off to address the health needs of constituents.

The 15 communities in Orumba South Constituency that benefited from the free medical outreach that ran for a period of one week at various designated centres, included, Umunze, Ezira, Ihite, Ezagu, Isulo, Nnawfija, Akpu, Enugu-Umuonyia, Umuomaku, Onneh, Agbudu, among other communities in the constituency.

The outreach focused primarily on screening and treatment of high blood pressure, malaria, diabetes, hepatitis B and C, arthritis, fasting blood sugar, typhoid, body mass index screening, and vitamin deficiencies. Optical services were also offered to the people by physicians.

The one week medical outreach was an opportunity for the house to create awareness on the benefit of proper hygiene, best practices in health management and the need for routine check-up through consulting sessions offered by the team at the outreach. Free preventive and curative drugs were subsequently given to the beneficiaries.

Speaking to Fides at the end of the one week medical outreach, an Indigene of Onneh Community, ChidimmaOkafor, applauded the house member for his efforts and initiative towards making access to health care affordable to all. She described the initiative as welcome development and a right step in the right direction. She disclosed that the constituency had received a breath of fresh air through the representation of Hon. Nwafor at the State House of Assembly.

She noted that the medical outreach was the first of its kind in Orumba South Constituency and said it would help to build a healthy constituency and complement the efforts which the state government was making in the health sector.

Also speaking, one of the beneficiaries of the outreach, Chief Simon Onunkwo, disclosed the difficulties he had while trying to access original eye glasses to manage his eye deficiency and noted that the outreach had availed him the opportunity of accessing the best hands in the medical field. He commenced the house member for the initiative which he described as laudable, saying it would help people live healthy lives.

For their part, the Traditional Rulers of Owerre-Ezukalla and Eziagu Communities, Igwe Thomas Onyeama Ogbonnia and Igwe Bernard Onwuegbusi, respectively, commended the constituency programmes, especially the medical interventions, which the house member had embarked upon since he assumed office. They expressed happiness, saying that light had been ushered into the constituency by the house member and advised all who received treatment via the medical outreach to adhere strictly to the prescriptions of the medical team.

Earlier at the flag-off of the Free Medical Outreach, Hon. Nwaforsaid the outreach was an intervention towards assisting the most vulnerable families, especially those without the resources to bear the high burden of out-of-pocket payment for hospital bills and medical expenses. He noted that the outreach was not segmented along ‘poor care for the poor’ or ‘rich care for the rich’, saying that everyone had a fundamental and inalienable right to the highest attainable standard of medical facilities and treatment.

He expressed optimism that the outreach, geared at achieving full medical fitness for the people of Orumba South, would become a yearly activity.

Hon. Nwafor who is in the first year of his first tenure at the State House of Assembly beckoned on stakeholders in Orumba South to join hands in the propagation of his Peace and Progress mantra for a consolidated development to be achieved in the area.
