We’ve either seen or read over the course of some months, how the Anambra State Government had been distributing palm and coconut seedlings to people. It followed up by further distributing pawpaw, bread fruit and kola nut seedlings.
These are commendable, no doubt. It shows a government which is deliberate in assisting people to survive the hard times. However, I’d like the government to also distribute more cassava stems in large quantities, so that every family can start planting them.
This will ensure that we return to the good old days when cassava foofoo was in abundance and eaten in sizable quantities. These days if one goes to restaurants, what is given as foofoo can be swallowed in one attempt because the commodity is scarce. I understand cassava stems were among stuff distributed before.
Cassava is a staple food in these parts, just like yams, and it should be one of the things the state government should make to go round.
I do hope that the next round of stuff to be distributed will include more cassava stems. As I said, the state government is on the right trajectory in terms of Agriculture. Let it continue and be all-encompassing.
