Fides Gave Me a Second Home

By Egodi Nkiruka Okeke

My name is Egodi Nkiruka Okeke, from Orumba North L.G.A. I had finished my OND in Computer Science at Federal Polytechnic, Oko and in search of a place to undergo my one year Student industrial Working Experiences (SIWES). I had known fides by virtue of their weekly bulletin and Newspaper till my elder sister advised I had my Industrial training there.

Initially, I was told they don’t pay and I never gave it a deep thought because I was solely after learning as much as I could from them.

My first day at Fides wasn’t stressful at all, the receptionist was hospitable and soon I met the Director of Fides Communications, Fr. Martin Anusi. Again, he told me that Fides didn’t pay It students, and as such if I could stay, I can start immediately. The next day, I began my training.

The Director introduced me to almost all the members of staff and also provided a computer system for me to learn with in the Fides Newsroom. That was IT made essay. It was easy for me to gain access to most of the senior staff like the Editor-in-chief, Jude Atupulazi, His Assistant, Uche Amunike, the Proof Reader, Lady Ifeoma Nwadi and Fides Advert Manager, Ifeoma Ezenyilimba because they were all members of the Editorial team. Here, I learnt news reporting and journalism.

It was hard for me initially because I was coming from my home town, Awgbu, but that notwithstanding, I still had to keep learning since it was what really concerns my future. Sooner, than I had expected, I was able to relocate to nearby Fides.

Sometimes, I would fail in some jobs given to me and would be scolded. At some point, I felt like giving up, but at the other hand, I had colleagues who would always cheer me up even in the face of pressures.

The Co-Directors of Fides, Frs Obinna Dike, Cyril Ezeani, Pio-Anthony Okafor were fathers not just directors but fathers to me.

Chuks Okoye, Francis Nwankwo, Uche Enem, Amarachi Okpunobi, Mercy Hill of the Video Unit were always there too. The production manager, Chimezie Ibedu, and the Costumer Personnel, Silver Ndukire with other members of the Press were of great help.

In fact, in Fides I learnt what team work means and I also realized one can have a great family in a work place.

Of course, I wouldn’t dare not to mention my precious parents, Mum and Dad, you are the best. Thanks for my life so far.
