A concerned Christian Mother and wife of an archdeacon, Mrs Oby Okonkwo, an anti-advocate of the phenomenon, has not only condemned the ongoing Eze-Nwanyi cult phenomenon in Igbo land, but has also expressed profound pity for the members.

She said she is working out a ablueprint for delisting them therefrom and rehabilitating them.

In an interview weekend, Mrs Okonkwo, wife of the Archdeacon of the Oyi Archdeaconry, Anglican Diocese on the Niger, Anambra State, regretted the upsurge of the said Eze-Nwanyi cult.

According to her, “The issue of Eze Nwanyị is one of the emerging problems of the present time, especially in some parts of the Igbo land. And we have ever since been inquiring to know the possible causes of the trend.

“However, to me, I attempt to say that one of the major causes for which our women and young girls are into the Eze- Nwanyị cult is as a result of economic hardship and greed. Another reason is lack of patience.

“We should know that God has a way of dealing with anyone who exercises due patience with Him. God is not stampeded into doing things. He does things at His own time, so that anyone who has a dealing with Him must exercise patience to know that one day God would remember them.

“Unfortunately, some people have the mindset of getting everything today — now, now. And because they want to make it sharp, sharp, by fire – by -force, they tend to commit themselves and put their hands into many ungodly things.

“I think these are some of the reasons why a good number of our women and young girls are into the Eze-Nwanyị cult erroneously thinking that the choice they have made is better one.

“But the truth is that, that choice is neither a good one nor a better option. I tell you the truth, most of them in it know it is not any easy for them. Majority of them are passing through a lot of terrible things there. “Regrettably, shame has caught up with some of them now that they are finding it difficult to come out. But by the grace of God, we are making frantic efforts towards helping them to come out of the mess.

“We are gradually reaching out to some of them who we found were driven into the cult because of want and greed, and they are now confessing, denouncing and renouncing membership”, she explained.

Mrs Okonkwo who is also the leader of the Women Ministry of the Archdeaconry had while disclosing the grand plan of the ministry to rehabilitate and follow up the “returnee” cultists, stated what she described as the negative effects of the Eze-Nwanyị cult.

She said, “The negative effects of the Eze-Nwanyị cult are many and varied. For one thing, the Bible said that those who worship idols will be like idols.

“Again, the fate of those in the cult is certain. It is obvious that when they die, they will not see God. They will have nothing to do with God; hellfire will be their portion”, she gruesomely emphasised.
