As part of its programmes to encourage skills and talent developments among the members, the Catholic Youth Organisation of Nigeria (CYON), Awka Diocese, on Sunday, February 3, 2019, organised a region-based Skill/Talent Hunt Competitions for its members.

The competitions which was held at St Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral Podium, Awka, Anambra State, turned to be a talent exhibition show as the Catholic youths, who represented their various regions, exhibited their expertise in various skills.

In the on-the-spot competitions that simultaneously lasted for 1 hour, 30 minutes, Nimo Region won the 1st position in the Electrical Wiring and the Architectural Modelling Competitions.

Other five regions of the diocese followed suit in the Electrical Wiring Competition with the following positions, Ekwulobia Region – 2nd, Awka Region – 3rd, Achina Region – 4th, Adazi Region – 5th and Akpu Region – 6th positions. While Akpu and Adazi Region that co-contested in the Architectural Modelling Competition got 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively.

In the Fashion and Designing competition, Awka Region emerged the champion in both the male and female categories. While Akpu, Ekwulobia, Adazi and Achina Regions followed suit with 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th positions in the male category, leaving Nimo behind with 6th position. This was even as Achina, Nimo, Ekwulobia and Adazi Regions, got the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th positions in the female category, leaving Akpu behind with 6th position.

Ekwulobia Region won the 1st position in the Proverb (Itu-Ilu) Competition while Achina Region emerged the champion in the Flute (Ifu Oja) Competition. This was even as Akpu Region won the 1st position in the Fine Art / Drawing Competition while Akpu Region won that of the Sculptural Work Competition. Adazi, Ekwulobia and Nimo Regions emerged the champions in the Graphic Designing, Singing and Dance (male) competitions, respectively.

Earlier, when he led in the concelebrated Holy Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka to mark the event which doubled with fund raising for the proposed N20M CYON Table/Sachet Water Project, the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev Paulinus Ezeokafor, stressed the need for laudable supports to the youths.

Pointing out that youths were important for the future of every society, the Catholic prelate called on all to give the youths the necessary supports that would aid them in skill development so as to be responsible individuals.

Bishop Ezeokafor, who based his reflections on the readings of the Sunday, exhorted all on lives spent in love for one another, saying that love was to wish the other person well. He noted that love would be selfless and sacrificial, just like Jesus Christ, who in love, gave his life for others.

In his address of welcome, the president, CYON, Awka Diocese, Comrade Izuchukwu Ezenwankwo, solicited for donations from all towards the proposed CYON Water Project that would be built in the CYON three hectares of land located at Ufuma, Orumba North L.G.A, Anambra State.

Ezenwankwo noted that there was urgent need to positively engage the youths, who constitute a greater number of the members of the society, so as to keep them away from vices. He said the water project would be cited alongside the existing Agricultural Farm in the said land.

Speaking on the occasion, the PDP Candidate for Anambra Central Zone in the February 16, 2019 Senatorial Election, Senator Uche Ekwunife, described skill acquisition as a prerequisite to human development, saying that skills would enable one earn meaningful living, with or without white collar jobs.

Ekwunife, who had sponsored a bill for inclusion of skill acquisition training in tertiary institutions’ curriculum, commended the youths for the beautiful and neatly made male top and female gowns they made in the competition.

Also speaking, the Young Progressive Party (YPP) candidate for Anambra South Senatorial Zone in the same February 16 Senatorial Election, Dr Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, commended the leadership of the youths for focusing in skills and talents development among the youths. Ubah, who was represented by the YPP Candidate for Aguata II Constituency Seat in the March 2, 2019 House of Assembly Election, noted human development was necessary for societal development.

Dr Ubah, who said he has been committed to human capital development through his FC Ifeanyi Ubah, Capital Oil & Gas Ltd, Authority Radio, among others, assured of quality representation all would be proud of, if given the mandate.

On his part, the National Chairman of APGA, Ozonkpu Dr. Victor Oye, encouraged the youth group for the skill development initiative and charged the youths on active participation in the society, saying that active participation of the youths, was necessary for societal development.

Donations in support of the fund raising, led by Senator Ekwunife, Oye, Ubah, Obi Gibson Nwosu, Eze Uzu Awka II, and others formed part of the event.
