Cult Killings in Awka: Police Arrest Seven

Following its determination to stamp out the resurgence in secret cult activities in the state that have resulted in many killings, the Anambra State Police Command has arrested seven suspected cultists and armed robbers, while recovering, a cut-to-size double barrel gun, one tricycle without a registration number, and some hard drugs.

The suspects who were arrested on May 3, according to a press statement signed by SP Ikenga Tochukwu, image maker of the Anambra State Police Command, include Chukwuemka Ozoekwe, aged 18 years; Chidozie Anagor, aged 18 years; Chukwuemeka Oyeoka, aged 18 years; Ebuka Okoye, 17 years; Olisa Obi, 19 years; Chidubem Nwankwu, 20 years and Nwankwo Kosisochukwu, all males.

Makuo Nwosu, male, a.k.a. Baby, and one other person whose name is yet to be identified, have been declared wanted by the police.

The statement issued on 4th May said that police attached to Special Anti-Cult Squad SPACS, while on patrol at Unizik Junction, intercepted all males and five occupants, including the driver of a tricycle. It also said the occupants took to their heels while the others escaped, as the operatives tried to question them. Chukwuemka Ozoekwe was arrested.

‘Chukwuemeka later led the police to their criminal den where Chidozie Anagor, aged 18 years, and Chukwuemeka Oyeoka, aged 18 years, were arrested and the remaining two are still at large.

‘Also during the raid operation in their harbour, the operatives arrested Ebuka Okoye, 17 years; Olisa Obi, 19 years; Chidubem Nwankwu, 20 years, and Nwankwo Kosisochukwu.

‘During interrogation, the suspects confessed to being members of the Vipers Cult Group and being one of the gangs terrorizing Awka Metropolis recently. The suspects also confessed that they were on a mission to rob the road users of their phones and personal belongings before the arrest,’ the press statement read.

It said the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration and Acting Commissioner of Police, DCP Fidelis Ogarabe, charged the operatives to sustain the tempo in the fight against crime in the state; even as he assured residents of the city that the confidence reposed on the police and all the security agencies in the state would not be taken for granted.

‘He directed that the suspects  be charged to court on the conclusion of the investigations,’ the statement concluded.

Awka, the Capital City of Anambra State, has witnessed the shooting and killing of many young men suspected to be cultists since Easter, a development that had made some stakeholders in Awka Community to call for action to stem the tide.
