Over 150 persons from Awka, Anambra State, on Saturday, June 6, benefited from the COVID-19 Palliatives that were sponsored by the Unique Ladies Association of Anambra State in Washington DC, United States of America, through an Awka-born member of the association, Mrs Nkechi Okwara (Nee Nnagbo).
In a telephone interview with Fides, Mrs Okwara, who hails from Umuzocha, Awka, Anambra State, by birth, and Dikenafai, Ideato South L.GA., Imo State by marriage, said the palliatives which were 150 bags of 10 kg rice, tins of tomatoe paste and drinks, as well as 4 big bags each of beans and onions, were the support from the Anambra State Unique Ladies Association based in Washington, USA, to help the beneficiaries to cushion the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
Fides gathered that Mrs Okwara’s younger sister, Mrs Theresa Morah (Nee Nnagbo) and Helping Hands Health Alliance, USA, also gave their support to the palliatives which were shared accordingly to the 150 beneficiaries, through the organisers, Lady Lilian Ejy-Akwuba, LSM and Professor Chinelo Ikeh.
The beneficiaries, who were seen smiling home with the Unique Ladies’ largesse, appreciated the donors for what they described as their unique goodwill.
Speaking with Fides at the event which was held at Umuzuocha Village, Awka, one of the beneficiaries, Mrs Kate Chinwuko, said she was very happy to have benefitted from the group’s goodwill. She prayed God to replenish their pockets, and continue to bless and protect them, especially against the coronavirus pandemic.
Another beneficiary and a senior citizen, Mrs Catherine Obinwaka, thanked the association and other supporters for the palliatives programme, which, according to her, was the first of its kind in Umuzuocha Village.
Mrs Obinwaka, who said she had since retired from active service, and depended on people’s goodwill to feed, said she was delighted to have benefitted from the group’s largesse. The senior citizen thanked the organizers for the event, which, according to her, was well planned, saying that the gift items got to the beneficiaries as expected.
