Tragedy struck in Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State when a two-storey building caved in, leaving one person dead and another battling for life.
The incident occurred around 9 a.m. at Prince Chinedu Akwuaka Street, Akpaka Phase II, GRA, on Wednesday morning, September 24, a source said. The collapse followed what residents described as being caused by flash floods that had long eaten deep into the structure’s foundation.
The deceased, identified as a visiting trader, had reportedly come to see his sister, a tenant in the building. He decided to pass the night, but while still in bed amid a heavy downpour, the structure caved in.
Police sources said the victim was trapped alongside a tenant who sustained severe injuries. On a distress call, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of ’33’ Police Division, Rev. Canon Chukwunonso Adulphus Onunkwor (CSP), led his men to the scene.
Both victims were pulled out of the rubble and rushed to the hospital where the visitor was confirmed dead on arrival, while the tenant remains on danger list.
The DPO and his men immediately cordoned off the premises to prevent hoodlums from looting, as crowds of sympathizers thronged the site.
It was learnt that officials of Onitsha North Council had sealed off the property pending further investigation and possible demolition.
