Anambra State Government in a bid to improve health index of the state through preventable deaths, has included Biafra civil war veterans in the state Health Insurance Scheme.

Executive Secretary, Anambra Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA), Dr Simeon Onyemaechi said this while receiving some of the veterans who came for registration at the agency.

According to Onyemaechi, the purpose for the exercise is to cater for the health of the veterans, who fought for the good of the state.

He added that the state government through its healthcare frame work wanted to give the civil war veterans quality and affordable healthcare.

“These veterans get sick and due to a lack of resources die in the process; being that these veterans fought for Igbo race, they need good healthcare and their check-up is covered.

“This is what the state government is trying to achieve,” he said.

Onyemaechi after a deliberation with the veterans gave directives that the general commanders of each of the Nine Brigades should forward the list of their surviving veterans and their brigades at a scheduled place for proper documentation.

He noted that the exercise would last for a month, stating that their ASHIA cards would be activated 30 days from the date of registration.

This according to him is highly commendable on the part of the state government.

Mr. Emmanuel Osita Ossai, General Commander, Onitsha Brigade commended the state government for coming to their aid.

Mr. Ossai, who happens to be the oldest of the veterans, noted that if the exercise had been done earlier, they would not have lost most of their comrades.

Mr Simon Belonwu, another veteran thanked Government for this development, saying that the scheme would save lives of the veterans.

Some other veterans in attendance are Mr. FCO Madueke and Mr. Eric Ekwunife.
