The Auxiliary Bishop of Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha, Most Rev Denis Chidi Isizoh, has tasked the faithful on a life of devoted prayer, penance and charity throughout the 40 Days of the Lenten Season.

Bishop Isizoh, who stated this in his remarks at the concelebrated burial Mass for the late Mrs Angelina Obiageli Nweke at St Peter’s Catholic Church, Umudioka Awkuzu, Oyi LGA, Anambra State, on February 27, stressed the importance of the three arms of lent which were prayer, fasting (penance) and almsgiving, otherwise known as charity, in the life of every child of God.

He urged all to look out for any pleasurable thing they would sacrifice in each of the 40 days of the lent for their benefit and those of others. The bishop observed that one could through such act of penance atone for their sins, positively improve another person’s life, or even gain extraordinary blessings from God.

Pointing out the need of prayer for all, the bishop charged the faithful to, throughout the period of lent, devote time to consistent prayer life, as well as to thereafter make same a part of their daily lives so as to enjoy closer relationship with God. He urged all to learn from the testimonies of the committed prayer life of the late Mrs Nweke, who according to the family and other persons, made the Rosary her best companion.

This was even as he advised all to attach importance to works of charity, as well as devote part of the time which God gave them free to visit and positively touch the lives of others, especially the needy and the depressed.

Bishop Isizoh exhorted those who indulged in extraordinary things in a bid to sustain their lives to desist from such, but to rather spend their lives being on good terms with God, the giver and sustainer of life.

The late Mrs Nweke was the mother of the immediate past principal of Holy Ghost Academy, Amaokpala, Rev Fr Dr Innocent Nweke, C.S.Sp, who is currently a lecturer with the Department of Religion and Society, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igboariam, Anambra State.
