It was a delight for the Catholic Community of the Federal Government College, Nise in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, as they played host to the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Awka, His Lordship, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, on his pastoral visit, 12 May.

His visit, which served as a symbolic moment for the 297 Young Catholic students who received the Sacrament of Confirmation, began with a Holy Mass that was presided by the Bishop.

Received by the chaplain of the Chaplaincy, Rev. Fr. Jude Ozumba, Bishop Ezeokafor in his Homily, thanked the Catholic Community and the school authorities for having a great synergy in churning out students that would not just be academically sound but morally and spiritually intelligent.

The prelate whose homily during the Mass cut across this year’s theme of Communication Week, ‘Artificial Intelligence and the Wisdom of the Heart towards a fully human communication”, called on the Church not to be controlled by the technologies created by man, particularly the communication gadgets, noting that those technologies were meant to be used with a sense of humanity and morality.

The bishop, also through the readings of the day, called on the College Community to always relate as one, irrespective of their different denominations.

While he admired the growth and pace of the Church, Bishop Ezeokafor also thanked Mr. Jerome Ikechukwu Okeke who is currently building the Chaplaincy edifice singlehandedly.

Earlier on, the chaplain recounted how the place of worship was a mess until Mr Okeke who happened to be one of the alumni students of the college that he served as president of YCS in 2013, took it upon himself to build a church for the chaplaincy. Bishop Ezeokafor called for continuous support and prayers for Mr. Okeke and his family in order for him to accomplish that which he proposed.

In a special way, he thanked the Principal of the school, Dr (Mrs) Ekumankama I.J., for her motherly love for the Young Catholic Students and also for her leadership style exhibited in the college.

The event which was chaired by Mr. Emeka Ozumba, had in attendance, the Chief of Staff to the governor of Anambra State, Hon. Ernest Ezeajughi, priests, parishioners of SS Peter and Paul, Nise, academic and non-academic staff of the college.

Highlights of the events included: Anointing of the Candidates,  presentation of awards; fund raising, cultural display and group photographs.
