The 200-level students of the Department of Mass Communication, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, on Monday, March 24, 2025, embarked on a practical excursion to Fides Media, Awka, to gain firsthand experience in media production and publishing.
Led by Dr. Henry Duru and Dr. Dada Oluyemi Michael, the visit exposed the students to the operational realities of book and newspaper publishing, printing, digital media streaming, and photography — essential aspects of journalism and mass communication.
Upon arrival, the students were warmly received by the Editor-in-Chief of Fides Media, Mr. Jude Atupulazi, who welcomed them on behalf of the organization. In his opening address, Mr. Atupulazi provided an insightful breakdown of the structure and functions of the various departments within the media house. He emphasized the crucial role each unit played in the production chain and advised the students to cultivate a group reading culture, which, he noted, would significantly improve their academic performance.
Following his address, the Production Manager of Fides Media, Mr Alexander Johnson-Adejoh, spoke to the students, explaining the processes involved in managing production flow and ensuring quality output. He detailed how teamwork across the departments ensured the timely and efficient production of the newspaper and other publications.
The tour progressed to the media streaming unit where the students were introduced to digital content streaming on platforms such as YouTube and Facebook. Facilitators highlighted the growing relevance of digital platforms in modern journalism and their impact on audience engagement.
Next, the Production Manager led the students to the Computer-to-Plate (CTP) section, where Mr. Alexander Johnson, who supervises the unit, explained the delicate process of transferring digital designs to printing plates. He stressed the importance of precision in the CTP stage, as any error could compromise the quality of the final prints.
The excursion continued to the publishing and printing section where the students witnessed large industrial machines in action. They observed the Kord machine, known for high volume newspaper production, and the Surd machine, used for solid and high-quality prints.
Other machines for binding and offset lithography were also demonstrated, giving the students a full view of large-scale book production. Excitement filled the air as the machines roared to life, printing large volumes within minutes. The practical session offered the students a vivid understanding of mass production in the print media industry, bringing their classroom knowledge to life.
The students also visited the photo studio, where they were taught the basics of photography, including camera handling, lighting, and photo editing. Facilitators explained how photography complements storytelling in both print and digital media.
Throughout the excursion, the students listened attentively, jotted down vital points, and asked questions which the facilitators addressed comprehensively.
At the end of the tour, the Director of Fides Media, Rev. Fr. Dr. Robert Anagboso, addressed the students. He commended their enthusiasm and discipline throughout the visit. Fr. Anagboso encouraged them to remain committed to their studies and uphold professionalism in their future media careers, reminding them of the critical role journalists played in shaping society.
He further assured the students of Fides Media’s readiness to support academic collaborations that promoted learning and nurtured young media professionals.
On behalf of the Mass Communication Department, Dr. Henry Duru appreciated the Management and staff of Fides Media for the warm reception and knowledge shared. He described the excursion as timely and impactful, noting that the students gained real-life experience that would strengthen their understanding of the media industry.
The visit concluded with a group photograph featuring the Director, Rev. Fr. Dr. Robert Anagboso; the Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Jude Atupulazi; and the lecturers, Dr. Henry Duru and Dr. Dada Oluyemi Michael.
The students left Fides Media excited, enlightened, and better prepared for the practical demands of the media profession.
