Awka South LG commences Desilting of Drainages

As part of preparatory plans as plans to avert flood in the raining season, the Chairman, Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State, Hon. Leo Nwuba, in company of his team, last Saturday 20th June, 2020 commenced desilting of drainages in Awka Ward III.

According to the Chairman Awka South Local Government Area, Hon. Leo Nwuba, the project was an initiative of the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, to end flood and erosion faced by the residents of Awka and to ease the flow of rainwater and domestic discharge from residential buildings within the neighbourhood.

He also disclosed a role that, residents also had to play in maintaining drainage blockages, noting that a Task Force Team had been commissioned to bring those who cause improper waste disposal to book.

Fides gathered that residents living in Awka Ward III, particularly those around Arthur Eze Road were faced with the drainage blockage challenge for the past six years.

Similarly, Chairman and Managing Director, Anambra State Drainage and Forest Preservation Agency, Chido Obidiegwu, who was also on ground while the gulley clearing was going on, told the press that they were committed to carrying out the orders of the Governor, Obiano, on keeping Anambra State clean.

He added that they started from flash points which he noted, Awka South Local Government Area was part of.

The ASDFPA Boss pleaded with Ndi Anambra to maintain good hygiene and stop throwing waste Into the gutters. He added that this would help the government in the achievement of its goal of keeping the environment clean.

Senior Special Adviser to the Anambra State Governor on Environment, Mrs Florence Oredine; Senior Special Adviser to Anambra State Governor, on Youth Mobilization, Mr Ossy Onuko; Secretary Awka South LGA, Prince Okafor and a Councilor were all on ground.
