. Promises Turn Around

Six brand new trucks are now in the custody of the Anambra State Waste Management Agency, ASWAMA, the Managing Director of the agency, Mr Amaechi Akorah, has revealed.
Akorah who spoke to newsmen in Awka during the inauguration of the Joint Environmental Task Force set up by the agency and Awka South LGA, said the arrival of the new trucks would help the agency in winning the war against filth in the state capital.
The new trucks, Fides learnt, which include three compactors and three swing arms, had already been deployed to the roads.
A visibly pleased Mr Akorah said the era of complaining of lack of trucks was over, promising that Awka would soon wear a new look.
He also said his agency would design more schemes aimed at getting closer to the people and thus reduce accumulation of waste by eliminating street dumping of refuse.
He said the agency believed in collective responsibility and neighbourhood based waste management anchored on partnership with relevant stakeholders.
He noted that it was in pursuance of such partnership that the agency established a Joint Task Force with the Awka South Local Council, which, he explained, was a departure from when ASWAMA did it all alone. He said after the partnership with Awka South Council, the agency would woo other local governments, agencies and groups.
He recalled the agency’s previous efforts in partnering with stakeholders such as Red Cross, Man O’ War, Flying Rangers, Peace Corps, Awka Development Union, among others, as well the agency’s Go Clean Awka Campaign earlier in the year.
He expressed optimism that the pains of the past had been consigned to the refuse bin of history with the acquisition of the new trucks and thanked the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, for his support.
