Chairman, Anambra State Market Traders Association (ASMATA), Mr Ikechukwu Ekwegbalu has called on traders in the state to learn to accept outcome of credible elections, and shun every form of accusation and violence.

Ekwegbalu made the plea in Onitsha during election of new executive of Motorcycle Parts Market, Nkpor on Feb. 25, 2020.

He said that usually trouble breaks out in markets after elections because contestants that lost in elections find it difficult to accept defeat and to congratulate winners.

He condemned the attitude of accusing winners, who resort to organising protests, claiming that there were irregularities and fraud; this usually result in creating tension and unconducive business environment in markets.

In a speech while administering oath of office on the new executive, Zonal Leader Idemili ASMATA and Returning Officer, Mr Ezechukwu Onwuetiaka praised the traders for their comportment during the polls.

Mr Onwuetiaka told those that lost to have hopes for bigger opportunities ahead.

In his address, Special Assistant to the Governor on Trade and Commerce, Mr Sunday Nwasa said that the election was transparent, free and fair.

He added that such was the type that the Ministry of Trade and Commerce advocated for.
“The Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Mr Uchenna Okafor has expressed his delight at the success of the elections.”

Mr Nwasa said that traders were gaining more confidence in the commissioner because of his wisdom and diligence in managing market issues.

The Patron of the market, Mr Richard Enukora enjoined the new executive move with decorum and avoid behaviours capable of breaching peace in the market.

Delivering his acceptance speech the newly elected Chairman, Mr Chidile Onungene thanked the state government, political appointees and ASMATA officials for a job well done.

He pledged to work hard to achieve greater heights and respect and also carry every trader along while ensuring continued peaceful coexistence of traders in the market.

The Head of Department of Markets in the Ministry, Mrs Jossy Eboh-Nwosu urged the executive to lead by example.
