ARTMA Official Shot Dead in Awka as Killings Escalate

By Jude Atupulazi

The unabated cult related killings in Awka, Anambra State Capital, continued last Thursday morning with the shooting and killing of an official of Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency, ARTMA.

It came a few hours after another young man was gunned down at Aroma Junction, the previous evening, Wednesday.

A source said the Thursday morning incident happened close to a Sunny Star Motor Park in the Aroma Area, where commuters ferry passengers from Awka to Nnewi. The source said the victim was an official of ARTMA.

But this time, it was not clear if the victim was a cult member as he was said to have been shot as he attempted to stop the driver of a Sienna bus who was driving against the traffic.

An eye witness said, ‘I think the man who was killed is an ARTMA official. He stopped some people who were driving a Toyota Sienna vehicle with tinted glasses, and the people shot him and drove off.

‘It happened just close to me as I was boarding a vehicle this morning to go to Nnewi,’ the source said.

Though there have been cult related killings in Awka since Easter, it was not clear if Thursday mornings incident was related to cultism. The victim jerked the number of those killed to thirteen since Easter Sunday, when the shootings began again.

The Anambra State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, was yet to react to the latest development as at press time.
