The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Anambra Chapter, has decried the collapse of the pitch of the Awka Township Stadium completed in December 2021. The association also noted with displeasure the dilapidated nature of the tartan tracks currently not in use.
SWAN’s position, which was contained in a six-point communique, after an exhaustive deliberation of the congress on the activities in the sports sector, March 29, also bemoaned what it observed as the poor state of the pavilion, which, it said, needed an urgent attention and comprehensive rehabilitation and called on the state government and the contractor to interface with a view to addressing the anomalies.
Also congress resolved as follows:
To commended the activities of her chapter towards sports reportage which is the primary role and responsibility as the members of the fourth estate of the realm.
To call on the state government to give Awka City, a befitting stadium by completing other aspects of the stadium, including installation of an electronic scoreboard, floodlights and construction of a second pavilion.
Endorsement of the second edition of the School Sports Festival, a flagship Programme of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission and to commend Gov. Chukwuma Soludo for his support for the sector while calling for more funding for the sports sector.
Reiteration of its commitment to partner the Anambra Government, Corporate organisations and individuals, to promote sports.
To renew the call for proper constitution of the various sports associations to ensure regular sports programmes and activities.
