As part of its ongoing clampdown on separatist movements, the Anambra State Police Command, Monday, arrested four suspected members of Eastern Security Network, the militant arm of the proscribed Pro-Biafra Group, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in Ufuma, Orumba North LGA of Anambra State.
Their arrest followed a joint police-led Security Force in Aguata acting on information received over time of planned attacks on security agents and innocent citizens by the dreaded group.
A press statement issued by the Command’s image maker, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, said among the four suspects arrested was one Maduabuchi Nwafor, alias Omenkpo, aged 32 years who is a native of Ufuma. He is identified as one of the native doctors who prepared criminal charms for the group and used his shrine for initiation ceremonies and meeting points for the criminals.
Also, one of the suspects’, name withheld, who is already assisting the police with information, according to the statement, confessed to be one of the gunmen dispatched by the group to enforce the illegal sit-at-home on May 30th, 2024.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered investigations to be widened and deepened to identify hideouts of the insurgents seeking to destabilize and truncate development in the state, the statement said.
‘He assured Ndi Anambra that the Police Command under his watch will continue to serve the people selflessly and will jealously protect the sources of its information to protect informers from harm,’ the release said.
