The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Anambra State Council, Comrade (Sir) Humphrey E. Nwafor, has congratulated the new executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council.
Delivering his goodwill message at the NUJ State Delegate Conference held at Godwin Ezeemo International Press Centre, Awka, on Friday, 24th January, Comrade Nwafor eulogized Comrade Emeka Odogwu, PhD, who was returned in office after serving out his first tenure.
Nwafor commended the NUJ for what he described as its unwavering dedication to upholding the principles of democracy, transparency, and accountability.
‘The press remains an indispensable pillar of our society, a beacon of truth, a voice for the marginalized, and a watchdog for justice. In these challenging times, your work has been instrumental in shedding light on critical societal issues, amplifying the voices of workers, and holding leaders accountable to the people.
‘As we converge today, let us recognize the shared struggles of journalists and workers across all sectors: issues of welfare, fair remuneration, and a safe working environment. It is a call for solidarity. The labour movement and the press are natural allies in the fight for equity and justice. Together, we can continue to demand better policies that protect the dignity of labour and safeguard the rights of all Nigerians.
‘I also urge the NUJ to remain steadfast in championing ethical journalism. As the fourth estate of the realm, you wield immense power to influence public opinion and shape national discourse. Let that power continue to serve as a force for unity, progress, and national development,’ he said, while assuring of the unwavering support of the Nigeria Labour Congress in all matters that promoted fairness, justice, and the collective good of society.
