The Anambra State Commissioner for Works, Engr. Marcel Ifejiofor on Wenesday, disclosed the existence of about 1,000 active erosion sites scattered across the 179 communities in the state.
Engr. Ifejiofor made the disclosure while interacting with members of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Anambra State Chapter, on the achievements recorded so far on the ongoing reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads across the three Senatorial Districts.
He revealed that the State Executive Council has inaugurated the Anambra State Design Review Committee headed by him to tackle the ecological challenges facing the state.
He said that findings by the government had shown that most of the gully erosion sites were caused by wrong channelling of water and failure of federal roads.
The works commissioner also regretted that some people in the state intentionally built and dumped refuse on water channels which resulted in blockage of water flow.
The commissioner commended members of the Correspondents Chapel of NUJ, saying that journalists in the state had reported the activities of the state government without biases.
The State Chairman of the Correspondents Chapel, Mr. Emmanuel Ndukuba, in his reaction, assured the Commissioner that the Chapel was ever ready to partner the government of the day for balanced reportage.
