The Anambra State Government has warned the Anambra citizenry, especially those living in flood prone areas about the rising water levels of the River Niger.
In a press release signed by the Commissioner for Information, Anambra State, Sir Paul Nwosu, August 24, the State Government advised flood prone local government areas, such as Anambra East, Anambra West, Onitsha North, Onitsha South, Awka North, Ihiala and Ogbaru, to be at alert.
Nwosu said the warning was issued by the Director General, Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Mr Umar Mohammed, who, he said, attributed the flood waters from countries in the River Niger System which were gradually moving towards Nigeria, starting with Kebbi State.
It said the development was as a result of upstream activities in Niger Republic and Mali.
‘While assuring that dam operators at Kainji and Jebba, situated on the River Niger, had been informed and were on standby, the agency stated that the dams were not currently spilling water from their reservoirs as of August 22.
‘The risk of flooding is however expected to peak by the end of August and into September.
‘Anambra communities along the River Niger System are therefore, advised to remain vigilant,’ Nwosu said in the release.
