The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Vincent Okpala says all flood-affected communities must receive government intervention such as medical attention to avoid disease outbreaks in the State.
“This is in line with Governor Willie Obiano’s directive to ensure that flood-affected communities do not suffer so much as a result of ongoing flooding.”
The Commissioner said this while handing over drugs and other items to Igwe Chike Nnaji, Traditional Ruler, Ogwu-Aniocha Community, Ogbaru Local Government Area.
Dr. Okpala conveyed the state government’s heartfelt message to Ndi Ogwu-Aniocha.
“Gov Obiano is aware of your plight, loss of farm lands and houses submerged in the waters. So, this is the reason that the Governor directed us to bring all these items.
“We have also gone round the community to see the level of damages done as a result of the flooding. We will equally brief him, when we get back to Awka.'”
Commissioner for Health extolled them for keeping the displaced flood victims environment clean, assuring of continued intervention from government would be supplied to them.
Igwe Chike Nnaji hailed the Government for sending the health Commissioner and his team to come to their rescue as well as ascertaining the level of damages caused by the floodwaters.
“I am happy because this is the first time Commissioner for Health is visiting this community without sending a representative.
“The State government through its continued visits to flood-affected communities has proved its priority in ensuring that victims of flood receive proper medical attention,” he noted.
Igwe Nnaji said that the community was predominantly farmers, which had made it difficult for them to go out due to the fact that all roads were flooded.
“We cannot talk about our farm produce because the floodwaters destroyed everything in our farms and we are suffering.
“No electricity, no network to make calls. So, our major concern is for government to look into our healthcare system.
“We appeal to government to deploy more medical personnel to the communities to help our pregnant women, the children and aged parents to have more access to good healthcare,” Igwe Nnaji added.
He urged the commissioner to convey the messages to the listening Governor, whom they believe would always come to their rescue.
