Infrastructure to Public Schools

By Sunny A Ijomah

The Basic Education Commissioner, Prof. Kate Omenugha has decried a donation of sub-standard infrastructure to public schools in Anambra State by some donors.

Addressing Zonal Education Officers (ZEOs) from the 21 Local Government Area during an interactive meeting with newly appointed Permanent Secretary, Dr. Nwando Obiano, at the Udoji Secretariat Complex, Awka.

Commissioner Omenugha condemned the rate of donation of sub-standard buildings and outdated equipment to public schools by some donors.

Prof. Omenugha noted that this had resulted in the disparity and the need for uniformity in the quality of infrastructure donated across the State schools.

The Commissioner said that the Ministry was working toward a provision of guidelines, with detailed specifications, on the type of buildings and equipment that would be acceptable by the Ministry.

In her address, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Nwando Obiano, emphasised a resolve to work harmoniously with the staff members.

She urged the ZEOs to carry out their duties selflessly including remitting to the government coffers, all funds as expected of them.

The Permanent Secretary noted that financial mismanagement and misconduct were offences in the civil service, which could be punishable by termination of appointment.

Forming a human hand chain with the Commissioner and the Zonal Heads, Dr. Obiano called for an unbreakable bond if they were to move the sector to enviable heights.

Mrs. Regina Obi, a Zonal Education Officer, thanked the Commissioner for creating an enabling environment for efficiency in carrying out their duties.
