By Sunny A. Ijomah

Anambra State House of Assembly has urged Government to direct State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to take proactive steps to check recklessness of tipper drivers on highways in the state.

The House made the call following a motion sponsored by Mr Onyebuchi Offor representing Ekwusigo Constituency, during plenary on Feb. 25.

Speaker, Mr Uche Okafor said that reckless driving had caused many deaths and permanent disabilities.

“Whatever we can do as an institution to assist Government to reduce rate of accidents on our roads is absolutely necessary.

“We urge Gov. Willie Obiano to direct Sector Commander of FRSC in Anambra, Mr Andrew Kumapayi to check reckless driving by tipper drivers in the state,” Okafor said.

The speaker who presided over plenary read out the resolution while lawmakers unanimously adopted it through voice votes.

Earlier, Mr Offor spoke against alarming rate of road crashes in the state caused by recklessness of tipper drivers.

He said that it was worrisome that Anambra recorded high rate of deaths and injuries in recent times.

“These tipper drivers drive against traffic; they do not obey traffic rules nor show respect to traffic officials on the roads.

“Every week, series of accidents occur, especially on the Ozubulu-Atani road in Ekwusigo LGA due to reckless driving by tipper drivers.

“What is most horrifying is how the drivers mercilessly run over their victims.

“I am convinced that proactive actions by FRSC can check their recklessness in a bid to curtail mishaps on the roads.”

Lawrence Ezeudu (Dunukofia) said there was urgent need to increase FRSC patrol teams on highways to check the excesses of drivers and avoid unnecessary loss of lives.

“Appearance of FRSC officials on roads will make drivers to bemore cautious. It will make the people afraid to committing traffic offences.”

He added that it was also a major strategy to check recklessness of motorists on the roads.
