Achieving New Goals in the New Year: The Art of Setting Resolutions

As the calendar turns to a new year, it feels like a fresh start, an opportunity to plant new seeds of change in the garden of our lives; cultivating the growth of new goals and aspirations. With this fresh start, comes the potential for a more beautiful and meaningful life.

To begin with, resolutions are promises people make to themselves, often at the beginning of the year, to do or not do something. It is a pledge and commitment to make meaningful changes in life and a powerful tool for making progress and achieving many goals. Resolutions can be a motivating factor and inspiration to people to work towards personal growth.

As George Bernard Shaw once said: progress is impossible without change. New Year resolutions can be catalysts for positive transformation in various areas of life which can be health improvement, finance strengthening, building better relationships, growing in career or academic performance, acquiring new skills, among others, when they are incorporated with necessary actions essential for progress.

When setting resolutions for a new year, we have the chance to look back on the past year and take stock of our achievements and areas for improvement. This reflection gives us the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and successes in order to make positive changes in the new year.

While it’s important to dream big and making resolutions, set ambitious goals, resolutions are not only about lofty ambitions. They are also about making lasting changes through action and commitment. Setting reasonable and attainable goals is key to making resolutions successful.

Certain individuals see New Year resolutions as nothing more than castles built in the sky. They argue that people tend to get excited about making resolutions but then lose interest or give up on them after a short time. Additionally, people do not consider setting resolutions because they think it can be demotivating when it is not achieved, leading to feelings of failure and disappointment. However, it is important to remember that resolution is more than just a goal but rather a commitment to making positive changes. Even when the desired outcome is not achieved, the journey itself can still be a valuable experience that brings about personal growth.

On the other hand, one of the reasons people fail to live up to their resolutions is due to their lack of serious reflection and self-examination while setting resolutions. A resolution is like a seed that must be planted in the fertile soil of self-reflection and passion. Without these essential elements, the resolution will never take root and grow into the change desired. Therefore, before making resolutions, one needs to consider what they are truly passionate about and let that passion guide their goals for the year ahead.

Resolutions can be building blocks for a better life and society. It can foster positive changes in both individual and the nation’s life.  Different groups of people might want to make different resolutions to change the world for the better through contributing their different quotas.

Citizens might resolve to cultivate gratitude to the state leadership and contribute to a more positive state by taking part in positive attitudes such as care of the environment to preserve the natural beauty of the state and also enhance the quality of life for all.

Government and community leadership can resolve to ameliorate the hardships among citizens by circumspectly evaluating the economic condition of the nation while making their yearly plans and budgets. Creating programmes and policies that address the needs of the most vulnerable citizens and ensure that these programmes are implemented effectively and not abused by those in positions of power.

Students can consider making a variety of resolutions that are geared towards their academic and personal growth and finding a balance between schoolwork and personal life.

Lastly, resolutions are not limited to the start of the year, they can be made at any time. Resolutions come from a growth mindset. When people have growth mindset, they are more likely to make bold resolutions and take action to achieve their goals.
