The 7th Substantive Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, Professor Ugochukwu Stanley Bond Anyaehie, says his main priority as the new helmsman of UNIZIK will be to prioritize students’ welfare, even as he described students as his major employer.
Addressing newsmen in his office shortly after receiving a handover note from his predecessor, Professor Carol Arinze-Umeobi, Anyaehie expressed the need for peace and true reconciliation, saying that he would devote the first one week as Vice-Chancellor in pursuing vigorously, lasting peace, adding that no meaningful development would take place in an atmosphere of chaos.
He announced that his administration would invest heavily in sports development, research, and building of medical centre at Okohia Campus of the University, stating that he would institute a yearly 5 million Naira research grant for the most productive researcher of the year.
Professor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, was appointed on the 16th November 2025, as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
According to the letter signed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Barr. Monsuru, Olugbenga Kukoyi, and addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Anyaehie, on 16th November 2025, the appointment followed a successful interactive session with the joint Council/Senate Selection Board held on Saturday, 15th November 2025, at Stratton Hotel, Abuja.
The appointment, announced by the Governing Council of the University, is for a single term of five years and with immediate effect.
Professor Anyaehie, a renowned Professor of Physiology and Clinical Measurements, was born on 16 November 1971 in Nkwere, Imo State, Nigeria. Prof. Anyaehie rose through the ranks and became a Professor in October 2013. He has served in various capacities, including Acting Provost, College of Medicine, Federal University of Technology, Owerri (December, 2023- November 2024); Provost and Visiting Professor (pro-bono), College of Medicine, Imo State University, Owerri (March 2021- February 2022); Deputy Provost, College of Medicine, University of Nigeria (August 2018- July 2022); Director, Directorate of Research and Publications, UNN College of Medicine (October 2013 to August 2018); Manager and later Area Coordinator, National Health Insurance Scheme (December, 2001- June 2003).
Professor Anyaehie has published over 93 academic papers in high impact journals and other reputable journals. He has served in different leadership positions, including Member, University Governing Council, Imo State University, Owerri, 2021; and Paul University, Awka (3rd Governing Council 2020 and 4th Governing Council 2023).
He is married and has children.
Professor Anyaehie succeeds Professor (Dame) Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, who has been serving as Acting Vice-Chancellor, effective Tuesday, 18th November, 2025.
