Enthusiasm and zeal among line Managers and the Departmental Heads of Regina Caeli Specialist Hospital, Awka, were high as the Hospital concluded its Strategic Annual Operational Planning Retreat, making a projection into the year 2026, for optimal and standard healthcare service delivery.
The aim of the event, which took place at Archbishop A. K. Obiefuna Retreat and Pastoral Centre, Okpuno-Awka, was to identify the weaknesses the hospital had, evaluate the strengths, as well as progresses made this year, and see how it could correct the weaknesses and amplify the progress, for better service delivery in the coming year.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital, Rev Fr Innocent Afusim, who disclosed these to Fides shortly after the retreat on Friday November 7, further gave insight into the gains the retreat had for the Hospital.
‘We now have a road map to what we are to do next year for a better standard service delivery.
‘The retreat has opened our eyes to where medicine is advancing, that is, towards robotics
‘In that area, we are thinking towards improving the efficiency of our doctors and consultants, so that they would gather experience to do robotics surgery,’ Fr Afusim said, and expressed happiness, noting that the hospital had already had some modern world-class medical equipment, such as endoscopy machine, for a 21st century healthcare service delivery.
‘We intend to improve on them, so that we stay onboard with the trend of time,’ Afusim added.
The Regina Caeli Hospital Chief Executive Officer further maintained that the Hospital had the interest of the public at heart towards giving them enduring satisfactory treatment.
According to him, satisfying the patients, treating them after the mind of Christ, with love, care, and passion, remained the watchword for the hospital.
The Chief Executive Officer thanked the staff of the hospital, especially the Line Managers, Heads of Department, and Supervisors, for their commitment and dedication to duty.
He also expressed gratitude to the retreat resource persons for their sacrifice and input.
In separate interview with, one of the resource persons, Rev Fr Martin Anusi, of St Michael’s Parish, Neni, noted that a great institution was known with a continuous renewal of the skills of its personnel to deepening the personnel’s understanding of their jobs.
‘That is what Regina Caeli Hospital is doing; they are not just renewing themselves by trying to look at new equipment to buy, but they are also upgrading the skill level of the staff,’ Fr Anusi said.

Also, another resource person and annual operational plan Consultant, Dr Joseph Agboeze, who said he was at the same retreat last year, commended the hospital’s Management and the staff for their commitment and passion to work to save lives.
‘The participants have done very well because I was here last year.
‘We have looked at what they did for this year; I saw a marked improvement and commitment of people that are ready to work, and have passion to save lives.
‘Also, I saw a very energetic Manager, Fr Innocent, a good man that has put enough energy and willingness to bring Regina Caeli to world-class standard,’ Dr Agboeze said.
Also in separate interviews, the Chief Medical Director, and Human Resource Manager of the Hospital, Dr Arinze Ikeotuonye, and Mrs Lilian Enyioha, respectively, pledged to do their best in ensuring that all they learned in the retreat were put into effect for the progress of the Hospital.
The event began on Sunday, November 2, with an episcopal address of the Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev Paulinus Ezeokafor, represented by the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev Fr Charles Ndubuisi; presentations of units’ reports, among others, and ended with a Holy Mass described by Fr Afusim as a Mass of Thanksgiving for Divine Benevolence, which, he said, enabled the Hospital to continue to grow and develop in leaps and bounds.
