Tragedy has befallen Nnamdi Azikiwe University with the death of a level three hundred student of the Department of Microbiology, Mr Tochi Martins Attah, in the early hours of Monday, July 7, who suddenly slumped and died while playing football in the Elmada Hostel Field within the institution.
It was learnt that the deceased, popularly known as T-Funds, had just switched from Microbiology to a medical course before his death.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said the match was in progress when Tochi suddenly slumped. Attempts by fellow players and onlookers to revive him failed.
Tochi hailed from Useh Village in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The deceased has been described as a serious and focused young man who was loved and respected in the university community where he lived.
In his reaction, the President of Useh Youths, Engr. Sebastian Aku, confirmed the sad news in a statement released on behalf of the family and the community.
The statement read, ‘With heavy heart but total submission to God’s will, the Attah Family and entire Useh Village sadly announce the passing of our son, brother and friend, the late Dr. Attah Tochi Martins (a.k.a. T-Funds Exchange), younger brother to Hon. Dr. Simon Attah, the current Party Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Igbo-Etiti LGA of Enugu State.
‘He departed suddenly while playing football. May God accept his soul and grant the family comfort during this difficult time.’
There was no confirmation of the incident by the University authorities as of the time of this report.
